Overview
Cataracts occur when the natural lens of the eye becomes cloudy, usually due to aging, resulting in blurry vision, sensitivity to light, and difficulty seeing at night. They develop slowly and can affect one or both eyes.
Common Symptoms
- Clouded, blurred, or dim vision
- Difficulty with night vision
- Sensitivity to light and glare
- Fading or yellowing of colors
- Frequent changes in eyeglass or contact lens prescription
Treatment
The only effective treatment for cataracts is surgical removal. Cataract surgery is a quick, outpatient procedure that involves removing the cloudy lens and replacing it with a clear artificial lens (intraocular lens or IOL). Advanced surgical techniques allow for fast recovery and significant improvement in vision.
