Overview
Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes that affects the blood vessels of the retina. It can cause them to swell, leak, or close off entirely, leading to vision problems and eventually blindness if untreated.
Common Symptoms
- Spots or floaters
- Blurred or fluctuating vision
- Dark or empty areas in your vision
- Vision loss
Treatment
Injections of anti-VEGF medication can reduce swelling and slow progression. Laser therapy and vitrectomy surgery are also options for advanced cases. Tight blood sugar control is critical to managing and preventing diabetic retinopathy.
